Most tourists think Hokkaidos peak season ends in February. They pack up their skis, wave goodbye to the Sapporo Snow Festival, and head home. They are missing out.
As a local, Ill let you in on a secret: March is actually one of the best times to visit Hokkaido. The crowds are gone, the sun is out, and the food… oh, the food is just getting started.
1. Bluebird Skiing (Sunny Days!)
In January, we get the famous "Japow" (powder snow), but we also get blizzards. You cant see your hand in front of your face.
In March, the deep freeze lifts. We get "Bluebird days"—clear, sunny skies with soft spring snow. High-altitude resorts like Niseko, Furano, and Kiroro still have a massive base (often 3+ meters). Its perfect for:
- Beginners: Warmer temps mean you wont freeze learning to turn.
- Families: Kids love the sunshine.
- Backcountry: Stable weather makes hiking safer (always check avalanche reports!).
2. The King of Crabs: Kegani Season
Foodies, listen up. As the drift ice (Ryuhyo) leaves the Okhotsk Sea in March, the fishing boats head out. They bring back Kegani (Horsehair Crab).
Unlike the giant King Crab, Kegani is smaller but packed with sweet, dense meat and the richest kani-miso (crab innards) youll ever taste. Its a delicacy you can only get fresh right now.
3. Lower Prices & Fewer Crowds
February hotel prices in Niseko or Sapporo can be astronomical. In March? Prices often drop by 30-50%. You can walk into popular ramen shops without a 2-hour queue. Its the smart travelers choice.
Conclusion: Dont Wait for Next Winter
If youre on the fence about a late-season trip, just go. Pack layers (its still cold at night!), bring your sunglasses, and come hungry.
See you on the slopes!
